Backaler has served as a consultant for both private and state-owned Chinese companies. During his subsequent career with Frontier Strategy Group, Backaler was part of the founding team of its Asia Pacific office in Singapore, where he worked with Presidents of Asia Pacific for American and European multinational companies.
He is an award-winning blogger at TheChinaObserver.com and frequent contributor to mainstream global media outlets such as Forbes, BusinessWeek, Fortune and the BBC. Backaler has lectured at Princeton University, testified before the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, and regularly speaks at companies and conferences on the topic of Chinese overseas investment.
Currently based at Frontier Strategy Group’s headquarters in Washington DC, he focuses on emerging markets across the Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Europe, Middle East and Africa. Backaler, a fluent Mandarin speaker and former Fulbright Scholar, has worked and lived in Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, and Singapore.
