Marc van der Chijs has been a successful entrepreneur in China in a wide variation of industries: games, e-commerce, online fashion sales, but established his reputation as co-founder of the second-largest video hosting company in China, Tudou.
Marc van der Chijs arrived last century as an expat for Daimler-Benz, but booked his largest successes as the co-founder of China’s largest video hosting site Tudou and until February 2011 as CEO for the game developer Spil Group Asia. He is now their senior advisor.
Tudou came online before YouTube was a success and has now a traffic that equals that of the US video host. By turning to the media sector in China, he took on possibly the most difficult industry in a country where the government trying to keep a firm lit on the media.
In August 2011 Tudou listed successfully at Nasdaq in a rather adversary climate that had forced many other companies to delay their IPO. In March 2012 Tudou merged with its largest competitor Youku, establishing the largest video hosting company in China.
The merged Youku-Tudou firm was bought by the Alibaba Group on November 6, 2015.
In 2013 Van der Chijs left China and moved to Vancouver, where he became a managing partner in venture capital fund CrossPacific Capital. Since July 2013 he is also on the board of Chinese P2P lending company Dianrong.com (Sinolending) and in 2014 Van der Chijs co-founded the world’s first P2P insurance company Uvamo.com.
In a combination of careful maneuvering and sometimes moving fast has put him in the ranks of one of the more successful foreign business people in China.
As a speaker, he is eager to share his insights, and help others to push their China business into the right direction.
