John Chan has more than 20 years of experience in the marketing, sales and business development fields and is the author of: “China Streetsmart – What You MUST Know to Be Effective and Profitable in China”. The book has been ranked #1 among more than 2200 China business books being sold online and remained in the top 1% of all books sold on Amazon for several years.

He started his career in the 80s with Exxon where he helped pioneer the gasoline/convenience store offer in Canada. During John’s tenure, the branded offer known as “Tiger Express” at leading Esso branded petro-stations became the 3rd largest convenience store network in Canada.

Since 1993, John has been living and working directly in China. He began working in China as a consultant in industries that included insurance, consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, and publishing. Thereafter, he took on Directorships in the China beer industry. His positions in the brewing industry included Deputy General Manager, Chief Representative and also National Marketing Director.

The brands under his management included Foster’s from Australia, Beck’s and Holsten from Germany, Steinlager from New Zealand, plus a portfolio of leading local beer brands. He has lived and worked all across China. In 1999, he was selected to be a panel judge for Media Magazine’s China Advertising awards and in 2000, he joined the tech sector as the Director of Marketing for Asia Online. In 2005 he was appointed to be an Executive Committee member of the Quality Brands Protection Committee, the preeminent body of the 150 largest multinational corporations in China to lobby the Central Government on Intellectual Property Rights and Trademark Issues.

Since publishing the book, he now runs a boutique management consulting firm which specializes in executive coaching and strategy development for multinational CEOs working in China and offers an executive orientation program for senior executives and board members coming to China. He is a professional speaker and has spoken in more than 20 cities around the globe on China related topics and appears regularly on Bloomberg TV and other media such as CNN, CNBC and The Economist Group. He sits on the Global Advisory Committee for the Asia Offshore Association and currently is the senior advisor to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees on strategic issues related to China.

He lives in Shanghai and is married with two lovely daughters.
