Joan Turley

Author and speaker

Travels from London

Joan Turley began her career an as academic majoring in Modern Languages, winning the French Government Medal for her language abilities. After her PhD studies, she specialized in the application of English for International Business, followed by three years with a global strategic research company.

She took the decision to concentrate on China, developing her inter-cultural skills by travelling to China to work on behalf of corporates wanting a ′soft landing′ in China. Using her negotiating skills and knowledge of the Chinese character she helped companies to sell their products, create joint ventures, get good supply chains in place and research new markets. She quickly became a favourite of officials in the North-East of China, becoming the first Westerner to be offered an office in the iconic Fang Yuan Da Sha building, known to Westerners as “The Coin Building” because of its shape.

A joint venture followed with one of China’s leading media companies and partnerships with Universities, where Joan used her previous experience of academia to become a favourite among speakers on the subject of the importance of inter-cultural skills. Her work in China at this point was pointedly endorsed in a written statement by the Welsh First Minister.

Bemused by the apparent lack of success and cultural mistakes which seemed to haunt the rest of the business world, she distilled her knowledge of 10 years of continuous success in and travelling to China, by writting a best-selling book “Connecting with China”, which is already highly popular in South-East Asia and the US as well as the UK. Joan uses her speaking engagements to explain how she has developed the keys to success in China through the creation of the type of “win-win” relationships which the Chinese favour.

She has now developed her books into a methodology for creating success with China following simple rules of creating harmonious relationships. This is disseminated through books, filmed Master-classes/conferences, workshops and consulting for major professional bodies and clients exporting companies to China.

Joan has led projects in the past with major multinational and government clients such as UK Trade and Investment and the Sir Rocco Forte Group worldwide. She has delivered successful Master-classes for the Lloyd′s Market Association, the Institute of Directors (IOD), International Business Wales and Electronic Arts. She is highly regarded by organizations such as Cathay Pacific for her contribution on China.
