Spanning a career of 30 years at the pharmaceutical giant Roche, twelve of which leading its China operation, William Keller has been taken de lead in investing in Shanghai more than once. In 1994 Roche was the first pharmaceutical companies to invest in Shanghai’s Zhang Jiang high-tech zone in Pudong. Now the high tech park employs over 100,000 people and has become wildly popular among foreign investors.
After his retirement from Roche in 2002 William Keller decided to stay in Shanghai and has become top-advisor of the Pudong government on life-sciences, one of the key areas Shanghai’s new area is investing in. The Shanghai municipality has shown its gratitude more than once to Kelling, by making him into Shanghai’s honorary citizen in 1998 and granting him the Magnolia award, a special award for foreigners who have gone the extra mile in supporting the city. Also, William Keller was one of the first foreigners granted permanent residency in Shanghai.
